Personal Reading Log Assessment 1: Mariah

The short story "Mariah", written by Che Husna Azhari is a story that I find very interesting and unique, be it through the way the story was told, up to its rich content which covers many aspects and parameters of typical Malay community living in a remote village in Kelantan. The story is packed with elements that got me glued and keeps me reading until the end. The writer can be seen having so much knowledge in the life of the Malay community living in a remote village in Kelantan as if she is one of them. I really love how she mix the element of religion along with the hustle and bustle of the village community.

The Imam, a man of high stature and well respected by the people was portrayed in a very unique way where the writer exposes to the reader the other side of the Imam which are not visible to the people around him. Despite being a man of religion, the writer somehow successfully gets the audience to accept that the Imam is merely a human being who falls in love with the beauty of Mariah which bears a resemblance to his long lost love, the Sheikh's daughter. With all the throwbacks about the Imam's past along with Cik Yam's and Mariah's character arcs, I find it hard to blame the Imam for falling in love with Mariah. Cik Yam, being a very devoted and loving wife mixed with Mariah innocence despite her unintentionally seductive appearances makes the ending somehow justified. Overall I really like the story, in fact, there is nothing to dislike about it. All in all, it was worth reading.
